Mobile strategy games have seen a surge in popularity over the past few years, particularly those with a medieval theme. From city-building to RTS battles or competitive PvP games, the variety of titles available is almost overwhelming. But if you’re looking for the most engaging medieval mobile games to try out in 2024, look no further! Here’s a list of 19 titles that we played and absolutely loved them.

1. Viking Rise

Viking Rise is no doubt one of the best medieval mobile games we have played so far this year. Set in an immense world of Norse mythology, Viking Rise features realistic visuals, immersive audiovisual, and intense real-time battles.

Created by IGG, the company behind the popular strategy mobile game Lords Mobile: Kingdom Wars, Viking Rise is a strategy war, and city-builder mobile game, currently available for Android users on Google Play, but an iOS version is also expected to come soon.

It includes iconic heroes from the Viking sagas, including Valkyrie, Snake-Eyed Sigurd, and Harald Bluetooth, and the resemblance of some of the heroes with the Viking TV show characters such as Ragnar, Lagertha, and Bjorn, is striking.

Players in Viking Rise will have to build their own cities, raise armies, and form alliances with other players, but also take part in the unique Naval Combat feature. Strategically controlling fleets of ships, you will be able to plunder enemy resources and take control over new lands.

All this while also hunting and taming mythical beasts, exploring mysterious caves, and discovering hidden treasures, making Viking Rise a truly epic and challenging experience.

2. Frost & Flame: King of Avalon

King of Avalon is another excellent medieval mobile game. The game is set in a fantasy world, with plenty of engaging activities and combat modes to keep you busy. The game has a great UI, smooth animations, and a fascinating story.

You start by helping repair a frozen and damaged Stronghold by gathering the necessary resources and searching for 3 beacons to hatch the dragon egg. As in most games, you start off with a few basic troops, but ut soon you’ll be able to expand and build a powerful empire.

There are plenty of activities and upgrades to keep you occupied, including researching powerful technologies, conquering lands, leveling up your character, the terrifying dragon, and your vast collection of powerful heroes. It’s probably the most feature-rich strategy game I have ever played.

However, what I hate most about this game is that there are times when we have so many icons on the top-right side of the screen taking a lot of space without any option to hide them, which can be quite annoying. Other than that, it’s an excellent game.

3. Call of Dragons

Call of Dragons is a medieval strategy game developed by the creators of Rise of Kingdoms. If you are a fan of World of Warcraft, you’ll love this game as you can explore a vast world, and choose between 3 factions available (humans, elves, and orcs).

You can as well command unique troops and creatures, and master powerful hero abilities. You can play solo or with a team of allies to dominate the battlefield, expand your territory, and become the ultimate ruler of Tamaris.

Currently, Call of Dragons is released in beta version with some area restrictions, the full global launch being expected soon this year in 2023. So far I love the game and it’s entertaining to play.

As we explained in the previous Call of Dragons guide, you can fight Dark creatures and Behemoths, giant world bosses, in large groups of players, kind of like a raid in World of Warcraft, but on mobile.

4. Game of Empires Warring Realms

Game of Empires: Warring Realms is a strategy game developed by EraTraveler Studio. In this game, you can explore the wonders of ancient civilizations, where you can pick one of the 8 available civilizations: Britania, Roman Empire, China, Korean, Russian Empire, Kingdom of France, Holy Roman Empire, and Japan. With each civilization, a unique set of heroes and units will be provided.

You, as the ruler of your chosen civilization, will be able to expand your empire by recruiting villagers to build farms, researching new technology, training powerful troops, attacking barbarians or other players, and taking part in events with your alliance.

You’ll be able to travel back in time to immerse yourself in the stories of legendary figures from each civilization, such as Pompey, Mulan, Kim Deokman, Ivan IV, Charles Martel, Hermann, and Nobunaga. It is one of the best games like Age of Empires on mobile with its intense combat, strategy, and research.

5. Land of Empires: Immortal

Land of Empires: Immortal reminds me of Diablo II, offering a unique combination of RPG and strategy elements, with stunning graphics and captivating cinematic scenes, which make it one of the best medieval mobile games to try out in 2023. ​​​​​

You’ll get to play as a Lord of the city and reclaim a city occupied by an undead army, build and upgrade various buildings, develop a strong army of heroes and different types of units, trade, and research techs.

You can form powerful alliances with other lords and rally against demon forces to retake lost territories and help reclaim the throne. You’ll also be able to equip titans and giants as your secret weapons and recruit legendary warriors who will fight alongside and help you expand your lands.

Nations of Darkness is a newly released kingdom-builder, strategy mobile game, that features four captivating factions: Vampire, Werewolf, Hunter, and Mage, all presented in a colorful fantasy world.

As we covered in the Nations of Darkness guide, each faction has its unique advantages, and there are over 60 heroes in total to choose from. As for its theme, is a mix of both worlds, modern and medieval with gothic castles and a dark fantasy feel.

As the leader of your chosen faction, you will take control of your survivors and build your kingdom from the ruins of chaos. The interface, graphics, and vertical layout look like have been inspired by Rise of Empires: Ice and Fire, but at the same time more complex, and with unique elements that make this game a great medieval fantasy choice.

The gameplay consists of building and upgrading a kingdom of the chosen faction, conquering territories, battling against other factions, training heroes, participating in events and competing against other players from around the world, forming alliances with other players, and much more.

With the feature of real-time combat, you can also team up with other players to fight monsters and bosses to earn better rewards.

You start in the Stone Age but as you establish your kingdom and progress through the different ages, you will gain access to more advanced technologies, more buildings, and powerful units. The one thing I would advise is to try to increase Food production from the start, as it is the most demanded resource in this game, at least in the first few ages.

Rise of Empires: Ice and Fire is another amazing Medieval MMO strategy game for mobile devices. I’ve been playing it since the beginning of 2020 and I’m very impressed with the audio, visuals, and gameplay. It features a huge variety of units, heroes, and buildings, impressive graphics, and an incredibly deep strategy experience.

You can even raise your own dragon, and there are plenty of events, challenges, and rewards to keep you coming back for more. With real-time battles against hundreds of players, you’ll need to plan ahead to outwit your opponents and emerge victorious! If you are a fan of RPG samurai games, then Ronin: The Last Samurai is the perfect game for you. However, the upgrade system is quite slow, so you’ll have to be patient when trying to obtain better weapons and equipment. The character also moves very slowly and you can’t defend yourself against multiple enemies attacking you at once, which is a bit of a bummer for a game with such a fascinating concept.

It definitely needs more content variation and control upgrades to make it a complete experience, but with over 5M+ downloads on Google Play Store and a 4.4-star rating on average, Ronin: The Last Samurai has a lot of potential and is still worth checking out.

You can choose between elves and humans to construct your own enchanting city, gather resources, trade with other players, develop your city, and research ancient technologies. Basically, you can create a whimsical paradise in this beautiful fantasy world.

You can also explore new provinces to expand your city, upgrade existing buildings to meet the needs of your growing population, and welcome various races like dragons, dwarves, fairies, and more.

The game itself does not take up much space and is easy to start. What I also like about this game is that the annoying little arrow or hand tutorial we see in most games lasts only a few minutes, and then you can continue to build a city at your own pace.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of turn-based games, but I did enjoy Grand War: Rome Strategy Games. If you are a fan of Medieval strategy games and the Roman Empire, and you are looking for a different strategic approach, this game is worth a try.
